Guided Reading

Guided Reading involves the love of reading and learning by genre. During the school year we study the components of each genre.  The genres included in 6th grade year include: Realistic Fiction, Mystery-Suspense, Historical Fiction, Adventure-Survival Fiction, and Fantasy-Science Fiction. We also read selections of poetry, biographical information, and lyrics from various artists (both classic and contemporary).

Guided Reading is a multimethod, multilayered literacy instructional framework based on Best Practices.  The instruction is standards-based and applies Bloom's Taxonomy to ensure higher-order thinking and inquiry. The instructional design offers flexible grouping. This style of instruction exposes students to a wide range of literature, providing the key element of student choice.  When students are given the opportunity to choose the book in which they read, the experience of reading is more personalized and authentic.
