Self-selected reading is the time where students learn to choose appropriate books based on personal skill and choices connected with class content. We attend the library weekly, and students receive a grade for selecting and reading books within our genre of study (or by personal preference). Sustained reading builds vocabulary, background knowledge, and creates healthy reading habits for a lifetime.
It is encouraged to visit our public library as well. Our public library is a great resource, an excellent place to study, or a fun place to share family reading time.
During each self-selected reading class, students learn about a genre, or type of literature and the characteristics that make it different from another type of text. By the end of the school year, students can identify books by genre, and determine readability based on personal ability.
Students are to be reading 15-20 minutes per evening for the reading calendar requirement; nightly reading has been adopted district-wide. A great way to keep a positive reading time set aside, is to post the calendar in a comfortable and quiet place for reading. A timer may be used, and of course students can read longer than the required time each day. Reading and sharing books is the best way to develop an ongoing love for reading. Enjoy great books- there are far too many to be read in a lifetime.
