Algebra 2 Syllabus

Course Description

This class is a college-prep course designed for students anticipating post-high school education. The course concentrates on sequences, data analysis and fitting mathematical models to “real-life” data. In addition, students will be exposed to the concept of function and basic trigonometric properties. Students will learn operations on polynomials, factoring patterns, simplifying radicals, and operate on imaginary and complex numbers. Students will solve one variable linear and quadratic equations, systems of equations, rational equations and equations involving radicals. This class is a prerequisite for Pre-Calculus.

Course/Unit Outline
1st Semester
Tools of Algebra; Functions, Equations, and Graphs; Linear Systems; Matrices; Quadratic Equations and Functions; Polynomials and Polynomial Functions; Factoring; Radical Functions and Rational Exponents
2nd Semester
Rational Functions; Quadratic Relations; Sequences and Series; Probability; Univariant and Bivariant Statistics; Trigonometry

General Expectations
Students enrolled in classes at St. Francis High School are expected to:
Come to class on time and prepared to engage in the learning process
Complete all assignments to the best of their ability
Treat everyone with dignity and respect at all times
Ask for help or clarification when needed
*All other rules and regulations noted in the SFHS Student Guidelines apply.

Textbook/Resource Materials
Algebra 2 – Prentice Hall. There is a website available for the book and supplemental documents.

Required Materials and Supplies
• 3-ring binder – at least 2”
• Loose-leaf paper for notes in binder (or a notebook that fastens in your binder)
• Straight Edge
• Calculator TI-84+ - this is your responsibility.
• Pencils
• Your Agenda – you will not be allowed to leave class without it

Grading
• Tests - 100 points at end of every unit.
• Quizzes - given Friday unless we have a test that week. No Friday class, no quiz unless announced in advanced
• Homework – daily - 3 points per day
• Participation – daily – 2 points per day
• In Class Learning Experience – can be any amount of points, announced in advanced
• Semester Exam - 20% of semester grade
• Total points you earn are divided by the total points possible for the quarter.
• Semester Grade Weight: 1st Quarter, 40% / 2nd Quarter, 40% / Semester Exam, 20

• Grading scale as defined by St. Francis High School.

Classroom Participation
• Daily attendance is necessary for complete comprehension. Your performance will suffer if you are not in class daily.
• Involvement in discussions, opening activities, lectures, note taking is a MUST.
• Contributions made during class are important – You MUST volunteer often every class period or you earn 0 participation points
• There is no sleeping or putting your head down during class – if you need to see the nurse, ask me to sign your Agenda
• 5 points every day – 3 points for completed homework (making a good effort to solve every problem) and 2 points for participation

Late Work Policy
• You are expected to do all assigned work, do it to the best of your ability, and do it on time.
• Homework is due the day following the day it is assigned, unless otherwise indicated.
• All tests and quizzes must be made up within three (3) days of returning from an absence.
• For daily homework assignments, NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Absence & Tardiness Policy
(Refer to the Student Guidelines for more information)
Generally, if you are absent (not truant), on the day an assignment is given, you will have one extra day to complete the assignment. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, you will turn in the assignment the day you return.
NOTE: When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and what you need to make up that work. This includes getting handouts, copying notes from a classmate, and rescheduling tests and quizzes.

Extra Credit
There will be various extra credit opportunities offered throughout the year. These are typically extra problems that will be turned in separate from homework for credit. They must be correct to earn credit.

Other Expectations
• Vulgar and inappropriate language and behavior will not be tolerated.
• Locker use during class time is prohibited.
• Bathroom pass can only be used in an EMERGENCY.
• 1 unexcused tardy is allowed each quarter. For each additional tardy, the student will serve a 15-minute make-up with me after school. If tardiness becomes a problem, then the make-ups will be for a full 50 minutes in the detention room.
