Reading

1.  Book Club - 35% of grade

During Book Club, we will complete a variety of reading units.  For each unit, students will be required to read a novel in class.  We will explore aspects of the literary genre and discuss literary elements.  Students will complete activities and have discussions based on their reflections of the reading.  Book Club includes teacher read alouds, student reading, responding to literature in writing, and small and large group activities.

2.  Zone Reading - 20% of grade

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday students will have an extended silent reading time called Zone Reading.  Students self-select titles they want to read.  Students will be encouraged to challenge themselves but ultimately these books should be ones students want to read.  In addition, students must complete 3 reading reflections each week.  These are collected on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

3.  Projects/Assessments - 35% of grade

Each unit will end with a culminating project or assessment.

4.  Vocabulary - 10% of grade

Each week we will explore various root words and how they apply to vocabulary.  Students will generally have assignments on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
