Kindergarten (K5) Screening
The St. Francis School District has developed a process for assessing the early academic skills of our incoming five-year-old kindergarten students. This process was introduced in September 2008 and has provided teachers with useful information on which to base their instruction. Achieved through an adjusted schedule during the first few days of school, K5 screening includes individual assessment of letter and number recognition, early math concepts, speech skills, and language development. Parents are informed of their student's performance and areas that may need extra practice. Suggestions are given for home enrichment and students are placed in appropriate intervention groups based on skill levels. We have found that students who have received intensive and targeted interventions have been able to bolster early skills in order to make the academic gains that are expected in K5.
