Discipline Policy
This year we are implementing the following system of discipline. As always, we will be working to help
students develop a sense of self-respect, self-discipline, and self-control. Holding students to certain
levels of accountability does this; our classroom and school rules demonstrate this by communicating
to students our expectations of them as young adolescents.
Our discipline policy is based on the freedom of choice and responsibility. There is always a
consequence for whatever choices are made, either positive or negative. When behavior becomes a problem, detentions will be given. Detentions will be held Monday thru Thursday from 3:05 to 3:30. The student will have two days starting on the day after the detention is given to serve that detention. For instance, if an infraction occurs on a Tuesday the student can serve the detention on either
Wednesday or Thursday of that week. During the detention time, the students may sit and reflect on
their behavior, read a book, or complete homework. No talking is allowed.
If students miss their first detention, they will be required to then serve two detentions. If they miss
one of these two detentions, they will then be referred to Mrs. Garcia-Velez following the district
discipline policy. Please note you will need to make any necessary arrangements to assure your child
can serve his or her detention. If your child is in any extracurricular activities please be aware that the detention takes place over the event or activity. Students are not allowed to participate in extra-
curricular activities on nights they are to serve detentions until after the detention is served. This
includes matches as well as practices. Also, if your child is responsible for another sibling after school, please make other arrangements for the younger sibling.
In the result of a detention, a note will be sent home to you. The teacher who gives the detention will
fill in the date, give a brief description of the infraction, and indicate two dates for which that
detention can be served. Choose one of these dates for your child to serve their detention and make arrangements for his/her pickup on that day at 3:30. If you have any questions about the detention,
please feel free to call and talk with the staff member who gave it.
