INTERNATIONAL CLUB
Coordinators:Maestra Senn & Profe
The mission of the club is to enlighten and educate students about various world cultures and how they are represented in the metropolitan community. A secondary mission is to unite students and the community at large under the umbrella of mutual cultural understanding. Special emphasis is put on cultural music and food. Meetings are generally once or twice a week beginning in late October and continuing to March.
Primary activities
1) International Christmas caroling at area nursing homes. This is a comprehensive project that takes several weeks of preparation. During the weeks leading up, the foreign Christmas carols are taught and rehearsed and cultural Christmas ornaments are handmade. Traditionally, the club sings (and then gives away ornaments) at three area nursing homes. The students eat lunch at an ethnic restaurant. This day is a fun way to connect the old and the young and is a positive service event for the students.
2) Field trips to:
- Ethnic restaurants (normally one in the 1st semester and one in the 2nd)
- The Holiday Folk Fair (November).
3) A variety of presentations on themes such as:
- Day of the Dead
- Origami
- Middle Eastern Culture
- Latin Dance
- International films
4) “International Night” (traditionally in late February or early March) closes the club season. This is a fun night that involves a potluck cultural dinner, followed by cultural presentations, and finally the evening ends with a piñata party. There are a wide variety of ages that attend this event: from parents- to the high school students- to the little brothers and sisters of the students.
5) Fundaraisers are led in both semesters to raise money for the various costs incurred (buses, paper for ornaments, etc…). One of the fundraisers- involving international candy- is especially fun.
