Special Education Referral and Evaluation

Upon request, the St. Francis School District will evaluate a student for eligibility for special education and related services.  A request for evaluation is known as a referral.  When the District receives a referral, it appoints an Individual Education Program (IEP) Team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education and related services.  The District locates, identifies and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private schools, and all schools located in the District.

Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child's parent that the referral will be made.

Anyone who reasonably believes a child may have a disability, may refer the child to the school district in which the child resides or attends school.

Referrals must be made in writing and include the reason why the person making the referral believes the child may have a disability.  A referral may be made at any school in the District by contacting Ms. Carol Topinka, Pupil Services Director at (414) 747-3910 or by sending a written referral to the St. Francis School District Office, 4225 South Lake Drive, St. Francis, WI 53235.
